210 Freeway Shutdown – Fire Heading Towards Homes – Sylmar at Newhall Pass

1 min read

As brushfires burn near homes in Sylmar close to the Newhall pass, the 210 freeway has been shut down. The fires are burning on both sides of the 210 at Silver Oaks Drive, Yarnell St., and Balboa Blvd. Transformers are exploding as fire trucks are moving into neighborhoods. This is where the 5 and 210 freeways meet.

People are attempting to evacuate and fire crews are engaging in structure protection. Several structures and vehicles have already been lost. There is a mandatory evacuation for the Saddle Ridge Fire in effect for Oakridge Estates (north of the 210).

The LA Fire Department spokesperson stated, “they have a major emergency brushfire underway.” They have the 210 closed in both directions. LA City Fire said they deemed the fire beyond a major emergency and are continuing to allocate resources. According to LA City Fire, “There has been at least one commercial building destroyed.”

Repeated water drops are helping knock down the fire. With repeated wind gusts, “this is all night event.”

LA City is using all the resources they have to fight the fire. LA County and Kern County are also providing resources. LA City Fire said, “DO NOT WAIT TO BE EVACUATED.”

EVACUATION CENTERS: Are being established and more information to follow.
